Naya Daur [The New Age]

Film Synopsis

A kind-hearted businessman who employs many people in a rural region of India decides to take a long pilgrimage and places his son in charge of his affairs. The boy is determined to modernise his father’s business but, in doing so, relieves many people of their livelihoods.

Shankar lives in a remote village in rural India with his mother and sister, Manju, and drives a horse-carriage for a living. The main employer in the region is a kind-hearted businessman Maganlal. When Maganlal announces that he would like to undertake a religious pilgrimage, his son, Kundan, takes over and wants to cut back on labor and mechanize the business – thus leading to loss in jobs. He also introduces a bus thus taking away business from the horse-carriage drivers. This angers the community and they ask Kundan to reconsider, and he flats refuses – but agrees to withdraw the bus provided Shankar races it with his horse-carriage. Watch the action unfold as Shankar unites a divided village, and how he sets about to keep his faith in winning this race between man and machine.

血染相思谷 (Blood Stains The Valley of Love)

Film Synopsis

Generally known as part of Kong Ngee’s “Nanyang Trilogy”, Blood Stains the Valley of Love is an interesting hybrid wenyi (literary)-thriller-ghost story film. It is framed throughout by a poetic voice-over narrated as a flashback by the young male protagonist, Yip, played by Patrick Tse.

The plot deals with the love of a young Malay woman, played by Molly Wu Kar, for a Chinese man (Patrick Tse), whose Mother warns him against consummating the romance for fear that the woman might cast a hex on him. When Yip informs his Malay lover that he is going to Hong Kong to visit his sick aunt, she becomes jealous and threatens to cast a hex on him, which has the power to bring about the death of any woman who falls in love with him. Supernatural melodrama ensues when Yip falls in love with his cousin, Ah Yi, (Patsy Kar Ling) back in Hong Kong.

Blood Stains the Valley of Love is audacious in both its unusual genre-crossing structure and in its treatment of interracial love and rivalry.

A Chinese man, Yip Ching (Patrick Tse Yin) and a Malay girl Solina (Molly Wu Kar) are two young people very much in love. However, Yip Ching’s mother disapproves of this inter-racial relationship. When Yip Ching plans to visit his aunt and cousins in Hong Kong, Solina’s insecurity causes her to threaten him with a curse. Yip Ching proceeds with his trip to Hong Kong, but Solina’s curse appears to come true in a series of unfolding tragedies. (Movie synopsis provided by the Asian Film Archive.)

Film Fact

The film premiered in Tokyo the same year at the first South East Asian Film Festival, the precursor to the Asia Pacific Film Festival, in Tokyo, which was set up by Masaichi Nagata, president of Daiei Studio with the support of Sir Run Run Shaw. The aim was to create a film festival showcasing best films from Asia. Eleven feature films from Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaya, Philippines and Thailand competed in the inaugural edition with “Santi-Vina” winning Best Cinematography and Best Art Direction and becoming the first Thai film to win any awards at an international film festival. The film was released in Thailand in December 1954, and His Majesty the King attended the premiere at the Empire Theatre, The problems started immediately after the festival. After learning that he would have to pay a large sum of money in custom duties to take the film back to Thailand, Pestoni decided to ship it to London. He was later informed that the film had been damaged during the voyage and died in 1970 believing that his award-winning film was lost forever.
